The match-3 genre (sometimes written “match three”) grew from simple grid puzzlers into one of the most popular casual game styles on the web and app stores. Most titles use a swapping or tapping control: you either swap two adjacent tiles or tap a cluster so that a match of three or more forms. When a match resolves, the pieces above usually fall, which can set off cascades and combo scoring.
Common goals include clearing a set number of colored pieces, erasing special tiles, reaching a target score, or making the whole board “transparent” before you run out of moves or the puzzle becomes unwinnable. Many games reward matches of four, five, or T/L shapes with power-ups such as line clears, color bombs, or area explosions.
Example: Jewel Hunt, Jewel Hunt 2, Fruit Matching In these games you swap neighboring pieces to create a line of three or more. Gravity fills the gap, and one good move can trigger a chain. Levels often set a move cap and a collection target so you can’t just match at random—plan a few steps ahead, especially on harder boards.
Example: Match Drop Here you tap a connected group of the same color (three or more) to remove it. The feel is a bit more relaxed than pure swapping games, with targets and limited moves to keep the challenge up.
Example: Galactic Gems 2 A challenging gem match-3: clear gold tiles on the board by making matches on top of them, and use L-, T-, four-, and five-of-a-kind matches for power-ups.
Example: Jewel Pop A balloon- and level-based take on the formula: meet score or color targets before you run out of moves, and earn row bombs, square bombs, and other specials from specific match shapes.
